Accessibility and equity are a huge part of AARP’s work. The Bicycle Friendly Business award program was a fantastic way to show our commitment to these types of efforts.

Of course being involved in the founding of Open Streets St. Pete was a major way that we encourage people to consider biking for recreation and transportation, and to explore ways that their city can benefit by expanding access to safe, easy, and convenient cycling infrastructure. We also have celebrated Bike to Work Day in the past, which encourages our staff to commute by bicycle.

Reflective of its pro-bike values, this coffee spot/bike shop hybrid encourages cyclists to park their bikes inside the shop, rather than locking them up outside, while enjoying a coffee or local brew. In addition to offering a bountiful selection of beverages, The Bikery sells high-quality sets of wheels and custom fits riders. The company also organizes and participates in various bike-centric community events, including holiday group rides and biking trips to Fort De Soto.

Welcome to St. Petersburg’s first certified Bicycle Friendly Business! Located in the Historic Old Northeast Neighborhood, owner Deana Hawk’s passion for pedal power is evident from the bicycle corral-converted parking space outside her business to staffers wearing St. Pete Bicycle Co-op t-shirts and bike art adorning the walls. Bicycle enthusiasts benefit from Deana’s strong partnerships with local cycling advocacy groups, including Shift St. Pete and St. Pete Bike Co-op, as well as being a Safe Zone-designated business, which welcomes all in the community. “People who ride here are very proud to ride, and when they share the space in my business, they spread the word and others begin to ride. This is a great way to strengthen the community.”

At Engle & Völkers we sell more than just physical real estate; we sell a lifestyle to our clients. We believe that lifestyle is embodied by the bicycle, and all of the fantastic experiences that a bike can offer everyone living in St. Petersburg. Whether for recreation, fitness, or transportation we believe that the bicycle can change our community for the better; we feel so strongly about this that we even feature bicycling in our marketing advertisements, and we have a fleet of bikes in our downtown office to loan to clients, agents, and friends.

Promoting bicycling is baked into our brand. We have loaner bikes at our office for clients, agents, and friends, we use bicycles in our advertising, and we even host group rides from our office on Friday mornings. One of the most fun things we get to do while promoting bicycles is showing off our beautiful city and region to clients while riding.

Along with the casual dress code, all employees enjoy free bike parts, discounts on bike-related goods and services, and a tool shed where employees can repair their bikes at no cost. The community knows our doors are open to every person. We’ve never had to work to curate that because it has happened naturally.” Bicycling guests benefit from secure bike parking, covered outdoor bike racks, accommodations for specialty bikes, and participating in special events like bike-in movie nights, rodeos, organized rides, Open Streets St. Pete, safe riding workshops and more.

Owner Rick Noll’s initial application did not result in certification, so he used feedback from the Pedal Power Promoter’s team and the League to create secure indoor bicycle parking and a shower that bike commuters can use. Rick then re-applied and is now receiving a Bronze designation. This is the first multi-tenant mixed use facility to be BFB in St. Pete! A pretty good story, don’t you think? It speaks to a small developer’s desire to provide amenities that his customers want: support to commute by bike.

Like many of St. Petersburg’s BFB-certified social service organizations, the Florida Consumer Action Network (FCAN) has become a strong supporter of events such as Open Streets St. Pete and the city’s Complete Streets initiative. Due to Tampa Bay’s limited transportation options, according to FCAN Campaign Organizer and avid cyclist Lisa Frank, “the bike is the most powerful tool for making those first mile/last mile connections.” FCAN has also empowered residents to develop innovative transportation solutions to improve the lives of those who live near St. Pete’s busier streets. Back in the office, FCAN’s senior managers do their part by using bikes for work-related trips while promoting free monthly bicycle safety/education workshops and group rides for employees and the public.

Lots of our clients are from the local [low-income] neighborhood.”  FPS has rolled into being bicycle friendliness by appointing an employee bike coordinator who tracks the numbers of bike commuters, length of bike trips, as well as special event promotion and the benefits of bicycling.  FPS is also the print sponsor of Open Streets St. Pete, along with other advocacy groups, providing the event with an in-kind donation of promotional event collateral.
