National Black Business Month: Latorra M. Bowles

National Black Business Month at The Greenhouse

The Greenhouse joins in the national effort to acknowledge, appreciate, and uplift black business owners in our community. For National Black Business Month, we are excited to highlight black business owners who have participated in Greenhouse programs.

GH: Tell us a little about yourself and your business.

LB: I’m Latorra Bowles, the Executive Director of Deuces Live, Inc., a Main Street organization dedicated to preserving and revitalizing the historic Deuces corridor in St. Petersburg, FL. Our mission is to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the area while fostering economic growth and community engagement. We work closely with local businesses, artists, and residents to create a vibrant and inclusive environment through events like the 2nd Saturday ArtWalk, ‘Art in the Park,’ Soul on the Deuces, and various community-driven initiatives. Deuces Live serves as a bridge between the past and the future, honoring the legacy of the neighborhood while paving the way for new opportunities and development.

GH: What Inspired you to start your business?

LB: The inspiration to lead Deuces Live, Inc. came from a deep-rooted passion for community empowerment and cultural preservation. The Deuces corridor holds a significant place in the history of St. Petersburg, serving as a cultural and economic hub for the African American community during times of segregation. I was motivated by the desire to honor this legacy and to ensure that the contributions and stories of those who came before us are not forgotten. By revitalizing this historic area, I saw an opportunity to not only preserve its rich heritage but also to create new economic opportunities for local businesses and artists. It’s about connecting the past with the present and future, ensuring the Deuces remains a vibrant and thriving part of our city.

GH: Why do you think National Black Business Month is important?

LB: National Black Business Month is crucial because it shines a spotlight on the contributions of Black entrepreneurs and the vital role they play in our economy and communities. It’s a time to celebrate the innovation, resilience, and creativity of Black business owners who often face unique challenges, including systemic barriers to funding, resources, and opportunities. By dedicating a month to recognizing these businesses, we not only honor their achievements but also raise awareness of the ongoing need for equity and support within the business landscape.

This month is also an opportunity to encourage the broader community to invest in Black-owned businesses, which helps to create sustainable economic growth and strengthens local economies. Supporting Black businesses isn’t just about financial transactions; it’s about recognizing the cultural and social impact these businesses have in preserving and promoting diversity within our communities.

Furthermore, National Black Business Month serves as a platform for education and dialogue. It opens up conversations about the historical and present-day challenges Black entrepreneurs face, and it fosters a collective responsibility to address these issues. By engaging with these topics, we can work together to create a more inclusive and equitable environment where all businesses have the opportunity to thrive.

GH: What advice would you give to other women who are looking to build their businesses?

LB: My advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is to start with a clear vision and a strong sense of purpose. Understand the “why” behind your business—what problem you’re solving, who you’re serving, and how your work will make a difference. This clarity will guide you through challenges and help you stay focused on your goals.

It’s also crucial to build a solid support system. Surround yourself with mentors, peers, and professionals who can offer guidance, encouragement, and expertise. Don’t be afraid to seek out resources, whether through organizations like The Greenhouse, networking events, or industry-specific groups.

Flexibility is another key aspect. The business landscape is constantly evolving, and the ability to adapt to changes—whether in market trends, customer needs, or technology—can be the difference between success and stagnation. Embrace continuous learning and be willing to pivot when necessary.

Finally, remember that community engagement is a powerful tool. Building strong relationships within your community can open doors to partnerships, new customers, and invaluable feedback. Being an active and positive force in your community not only enhances your brand but also contributes to the collective growth and success of everyone involved.

GH: What are your future goals/plans for your business?

LB: Our future goal for Deuces Live, Inc. center is expanding our impact within the community and beyond. We aim to further develop and diversify our programming to include a wider range of cultural, educational, and economic initiatives that benefit both residents and visitors to the Deuces corridor. One of our key goals is to enhance our existing events, like the 2nd Saturday ArtWalk and ‘Art in the Park,’ and Soul on the Deuces by incorporating new elements to draw even more community participation and highlight the rich heritage of the area.

We’re also focused on building stronger partnerships with local businesses, artists, and organizations to create a more cohesive and vibrant community. By fostering these collaborations, we hope to increase economic opportunities for our stakeholders and ensure the Deuces continues to be a hub of creativity and entrepreneurship.

In addition, we are exploring ways to secure sustainable funding and resources that allow us to scale our operations and reach. This includes pursuing grants, sponsorships, and innovative revenue streams that align with our mission. Our long-term vision is to establish the Deuces Corridor as a nationally recognized cultural district, preserving its history while embracing future growth and development.

Ultimately, our plans are driven by a commitment to inclusivity, empowerment, and cultural preservation. We want to create a space where everyone feels welcome, where the legacy of the past is honored, and where the potential of the future is limitless.
