What began as a week-long celebration has since evolved into a month-long observance that honors the history, culture, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. From September 15 to October 15, Americans celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month to recognize the remarkable achievements and lasting impact of Hispanic Americans who continue to inspire others to reach for success.
The Greenhouse proudly joins the national effort to acknowledge, celebrate, and uplift Hispanic business owners in our community. In recognition of National Hispanic Heritage Month, we are excited and honored to spotlight Hispanic entrepreneurs who have partnered with The Greenhouse.
Meet Johana Perez, Owner of United Granite:
GH: How has your Hispanic identity influenced your small business?
JP: My Hispanic identity is the core of our business. It’s the fuel that by nature makes something out of nothing, because failure and success are both a lesson.
GH: Can you share a significant moment or achievement in your life that you attribute to your Hispanic heritage?
JP: I feel an immense sense of pride when I reflect on the projects we’ve been fortunate to complete. Seeing the growth of my business, which is largely powered by a Hispanic team, reminds me how our shared cultural values drive us to deliver our very best work every time.
GH: How do you celebrate your Hispanic heritage?
JP: Our heritage is woven into our everyday life, from our resilience during challenging times to our shared meals, our love for café con leche, and our language.
GH: What are the best ways others may celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in St. Petersburg?
JP: The best way to honor our heritage is by creating inclusive opportunities, especially those that provide information and resources in the Spanish language.
GH: What advice would you give to other business owners?
JP: The best advice I ever received was: if your goal doesn’t scare you, it’s not big enough. If it scares you, that’s the direction you should go. Growing up in a family business, then branching out into a new venture with my brother, was intimidating, but here we are 13 years later. Don’t get discouraged during challenging moments, both wins and setbacks contribute to any entrepreneur’s overall growth.
GH: What contributions do you believe Hispanic/Latino Americans have made to small businesses in St. Petersburg?
JP: With St. Pete’s incredible growth over the past 5–10 years, it’s undeniable that Latinos have played a key role, especially in the construction industry, the city’s food scene, and various other fields where talented Latino professionals continue to thrive.
