National Black Business Month: Kela Holloway

National Black Business Month at The Greenhouse

The Greenhouse joins in the national effort to acknowledge, appreciate, and uplift black business owners in our community. For National Black Business Month, we are excited to highlight black business owners who have participated in Greenhouse programs.

Meet Kela Holloway, the Owner and Founder of Kre8tive Stylz Hair Studio.

GH: Tell us a little about yourself and your business.

KH: My name is Akeelah Holloway. I’m a proud business owner, cosmetology Instructor, and lead stylist at Kre8tive Stylz Hair Studio. I opened my salon about 12 years ago as a black woman minority business owner. At Kre8tive Stylz Hair studio, my Team is thrilled to be a part of each client’s self-care journey, performing a plethora of services for your desired beauty needs. We aim to provide professional, authentic, and “kre8tive” Services. Currently, I try to encourage young, driven, self motivated, and talented individuals, who need just a little guidance, and faith to help them excel in entrepreneurship.

GH: What Inspired you to start your business?

KH: My dream has always been to have a full-service salon. I’ve always enjoyed the art of beauty! I enjoy helping others build up their self confidence by making them feel like their desired Image.

GH: Why do you think National Black Business Month is important?

KH:  Well among many reasons, I can list a few. I believe NBB month is so important because it provides a platform to celebrate and support black-owned businesses, which are often underrepresented and face unique challenges in the business world. I also believe black-owned businesses have historically faced barriers to entry and growth due to systemic inequalities such as lack of access to capital, discrimination, and limited opportunities for networking and mentorship. National Black Business Month raises awareness of these challenges and advocates for policies and initiatives to address them.

GH: What advice would you give to other women who are looking to build their businesses?

KH: It’s important to understand the industry you’re entering, including key trends, potential challenges, and opportunities for growth. Researching the market will help you identify your target customers, their needs and preferences, and how you can differentiate your business from competitors. Analyzing your competition will also help you understand their strengths and weaknesses, and how you can position your business to effectively compete in the market. Having a well thought out business plan is essential for success.

GH: What are your future goals/plans for your business?

KH: My goal is not only to create a profitable income for myself and employees, but to instill ethical business culture, integrity, moral, corporate and social responsibility. Lastly, my goal is to teach and offer a fun outlet for the younger generation. This is where training/hiring skilled professionals will be helpful.
