Community Spotlight: Claudia Johnson, Owner of Grand Hacienda

GH: How has your Hispanic identity influenced your small business?

CJ: I’m originally from Mexico City, and when we opened Grand Hacienda, we wanted to bring a true piece of Mexico to St. Petersburg and the Tampa Bay area. Every detail in the restaurant reflects authentic Mexican artistry,  from tiles and star lights to tableware and handcrafted décor made by Indigenous artisans across Mexico. Our goal is to showcase the beauty, craftsmanship, and culture of our country in every corner of our restaurant.

GH: Can you share a significant moment or achievement in your life that you attribute to your Hispanic heritage?

CJ: My proudest achievement is opening Grand Hacienda Mexican Cuisine: the name truly says it all. It’s been incredible to see how warmly the community has embraced us and our authentic food. Our recipes are passed down through family traditions, and sharing that heritage where I live and where my daughter is growing up means the world to me.

In 2010, Mexican cuisine was declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, and I’m proud to bring a taste of that heritage to the St. Petersburg community.

GH: How do you celebrate your Hispanic heritage?

CJ: I participate in several activities throughout Tampa Bay, including Hispanic festivals and small business development forums. At the restaurant, we celebrate by decorating with flags from across Latin America, creating special dishes, and attending local Hispanic concerts and cultural events.

GH: What are the best ways others may celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in St. Petersburg?

CJ: Explore and support local Hispanic-owned businesses! From street food vendors to family-owned restaurants representing Mexico, Central and South America, and Spain, there’s so much diversity to experience. Attend festivals, enjoy the music and art, and connect with organizations like the Latin Chamber of Commerce, Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and Latinos Unidos, which all host events throughout the month.

GH: What initiatives or organizations do you support that promote Hispanic causes or uplift the St. Petersburg community?

CJ: I’m an active supporter of the Latin Chamber of Commerce, local economic development organizations, and several groups that champion Hispanic professionals and entrepreneurs, including UNIDAS, HPWA (Hispanic Professional Women’s Association), and Hispanic Heritage Month Awards. These groups create opportunities for connection, professional growth, and community engagement.

GH: What role models or influential figures from the Hispanic community have inspired you or your business?

CJ: I find inspiration in many leaders across Tampa Bay’s Hispanic community. They’re business owners, professionals, and mothers who are all working tirelessly to uplift our culture and support others. One standout example is Diana Texeira, President of the Latin Chamber of Commerce, who has earned the Hispanic Heritage Award for her dedication to uniting and strengthening our community. Her leadership and passion continue to inspire me.
